Finally, a new painting! My production slows down when my sales slow down, which is not right but unfortunately what happens. It got to the point where I hadn't been in my studio for days, when a friend asked me to visit an adult painting class she teaches. I did this painting in a quick 45 minute demonstration. The students, some of whom were quite good painters, were thoroughly engaged as they watched my process, and I enjoyed myself immensely.

Summer went by too fast. I participated in the weekly Rockland Art Market though the summer months. It was a lovely venue in Rockland's downtown waterfront Harbor Park. Sales were ok, but I did much better at the weekend juried Fine Art Shows.

My gardens were great this year, except that just before harvest Hurricane Irene came through to flattened the corn and blight the tomatoes :( Lately, I am working on getting enough trees down and out of my woods, cut up, split, and stacked, to feed my woodstoves over the winter. It's an arduous annual task that seems to get harder to do each year. I am considering putting some kind of backup heating source on my wish list!

Health-wise, I'm good! I see my oncologist this coming week for the results of recent scans and tests, but I'm sure I'm good. How do I know? The length of time between the tests and follow up visit is one indication. If there was anything to worry about, I'm sure they would have gotten me right in there. Good news they make you wait to hear. I celebrated 3 years this summer surviving breast cancer surgery and chemotherapy treatments. Each year my odds improve.

Get out in the woods and enjoy. Paint on!

A brief review of 2010

"Shore House" Salt water farm near Castine. 7.5"x22" Watercolor

This past summer found me with my show on the road. I did regional art shows from Portland to Bar Harbor, selling paintings and even winning a 1st Place in Oils cash prize, and a purchase award. It was a lot of driving and hard work, but fun to meet and talk with fellow artists and customers in person. Between shows, through the Summer and Fall, I loaded my gear and my dog into my car and headed out to paint on locations deep in the woods and along the coast from the Mid-Coast area to Lubec.

Now we are all buried under tons of snow for the duration of winter. In the studio I've been working on winter scenes, but also contemplating those gorgeous days of summer by working from references gathered months ago. Seeing some of these beautiful new watercolors, nicely matted and framed, warms the walls of my studio and my heart just to look at them. Should you choose one to purchase for your own, I believe you will see the light, and feel the warmth of Summer days ahead, too.

Ok, yes, every cat has a story, and there is more to this cat than she's letting on here.

This is my cat, Silvie. She came out of the woods surrounding my house as a feral kitten and was living in my woodpile. It took 3 weeks of coaxing with kibbles just to get her to come out so I could have a look at her!, probably a month before she came up onto the porch, and many months before I felt she was safe to leave alone with my dog. I was afraid she would take my dog's nose off! That was many years ago now. She's mellowed quite a bit, as you can see. Silvie is quite civilized and socialized now, and can be very silly. I don't know how she fit herself into that basket. She doesn't like cameras, but I couldn't resist taking the picture. I think it makes a great Holiday Card. I hope you will agree, and get some to share with the cat lovers among your family and friends this Christmas Season.

I haven't shown my work locally much at all, and certainly not these past two years while dealing with surgeons, oncologists, endless monitoring, complications and side-effects from treatment. My last scans did show an area of concern for possible recurrence, and rather than jump right back into more surgery and treatment, I've decided to hold off and re-scan in a couple of months to see if there are any changes. So now it's time, and a couple of opportunities to show in various venues have come up. I've been busy matting and framing watercolors, and wiring canvases for hanging. I've already put some paintings in a cafe in downtown Bangor to be included in the Art Walk this month, and I will exhibit at Morgan Hill Event Center for 2 months starting mid-April. I hope to re-connect with a gallery that has had much success selling my work in the past. And I am also planning some changes and additions to my website which has been my main source of sales for many years. So I will continue my virtual existence being a cyber artist, but will make a few real life local appearances and look forward to meeting those who are interested in my work in person.

The Tyranny of Positive Thinking

It's always there, in the back of my mind. Although I've been breast cancer free for 1 and 1/2 years, deep in the recesses of my mind is the thought that it may come back. In my case there is a very good chance of recurrence within the first 4 years. I did all I can do medically with the best professional team I could find, and now I continue to take care of myself with diet, exercise and ways to try to reduce that risk, but lurking just beneath the surface the threat remains. Even after the initial devastation of surgery and treatment, having cancer is painful and exhausting. Some concerned persons are anxious to see me return to my old self, not realizing there is no way to go back to my pre-cancer self. One is never the same again. And it is a matter of biology whether the breast cancer returns or not. Either the chemotherapy worked or it didn't.

There is nothing more annoying than some well-meaning, but totally ignorant person, whether parent or sibling, lover or friend, telling me all I need to do to be "cured" is to exhibit a positive attitude and pray to god. That may make them feel better, but no amount of positive thinking on my part or prayer by entire congregations will change anything that's already happened or alter the outcome. Again, the treatment worked or it didn't. It is, however, possible to buy time with medical treatment and a healthy post treatment lifestyle; possible, but no guarantee. If, as a post-treatment cancer survivor, I am doing that, then I am already exhibiting an extremely positive attitude. Some days are better than others when there are side-effects from treatment to manage or adjust to for years or even permanently. So to expect me to accommodate and take care of others by denying my own reality with a chirpy "positive" attitude and prayers of thanks for a complete healing that may or may not have occurred is, in my opinion, abusive. It may make others who say they care feel better if I never talk about it, but it may also prove fatal to myself if I am not aware of how I am really feeling and available for follow-up medical monitoring. It will occasionaly come up in a conversation because it is such a huge reference point in my life, part of my experience, and very physical existence. Believe me, no one would be happier if I could turn back time and make it all go away.

I am not going to upload all the paintings, but you can view them here. I am really glad I did the project and feel a sense of accomplishment at it's completion. The triumph over the side effects of the chemotherapy drug, taxol, is especially satisfying after not being able to do the simplest things like button my shirt, feel the ground under my feet, or hold a brush!

The sales of paintings have been good and helped me catch up with myself a little bit financially. There are still some beautiful paintings from this collection available, and I hope those sell soon too. Please do share the link with anyone you think may be interested in this project or in adding one of my paintings to their collection. Aside from the direct sales, two commissions came out of this project. I am so very glad to be well enough and able to commit to a commission piece once again.

Small Friends

I am always amazed these fragile little birds can survive a long, bitter cold Maine winter. I guess they are stronger than they appear. I am now 1 year past diagnosis and surgery for breast cancer, and 6 months past chemotherapy treatments. I am finding that I, too, am stronger than I thought, although I have looked and felt pretty fragile at times this past year. Facing metastasis, however, I know my life remains as tenuous as my little friends here. Though the struggle continues, I see each day as a gift, and look forward to warmer, brighter days ahead.

So you can imagine how happy I was to find a little window of opportunity when I felt well enough and coherent enough to paint! This palette knife painting portrays the emotion of a winter day. This picture was taken in October. I look great, all things considered! Alive is good. My hair is finally growing back. Before BC it was long dark brown to the middle of my back, but after surgery and chemotherapy these last 10 months, I'll happily settle for short, pure white fuzz! The problem with breast cancer is that recovery is not like getting over the flu. You don't just stop chemotherapy and are instantly well. I wish that were so, but it's not. Getting back into my studio without health and medical interuptions and distractions, and re-starting my online sales, especially during the recent economic events, is proving very difficult, adding tremendouly to a very precarious and stressful existance. I recently went with a new friend I met through the American Cancer Society to Camp Fair Haven in Brooks, Maine. It was a lovely Fall day and we both enjoyed this quiet, secluded spot on a gorgeous lake deep in the woods of mid-coast Maine. If anyone needs a sunny spot on a rock to meditate on, this is it. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?!!

As a "Breast Cancer Survivor", I have actually heard people refer to me as brave or courageous, inspirational even! Most days I don't feel that way at all, and some days I'm just lost. Too often it seems any little thing can erode my confidence. For instance, this morning I walked past the bathroom closet, the door ajar. From the corner of my eye I saw a box of hygienic face masks. Instantly, the horror of chemotherapy treatment came upon me. I remembered white blood counts so low I could not risk going into a crowded grocery store or waiting in a line at the Post Office, forget about a friendly hug from a friend, neighbor, or worse, any small children! On certain days, I couldn't even work alone in my garden without a mask to protect me from airborne spores and germy dirt! And perhaps the worse place I had to be on a daily basis for a few months while on chemo was a crowded blood lab waiting room where everyone in there was sick with something! That box of earlobe masks sitting there on the shelf in my bathroom closet just totally decomposed me. I did this digital portrait as a way to help me process the intense feelings of raw fear I was experiencing. And how fortunate a friend showed up just as I was finishing up to pull me out of the past and back to the present! Thinking about it now, several hours later, I suppose since it's true I never showed or even felt any fear while going through chemotherapy, it must have been there on some level because it's showing up now, triggered by a stupid box of masks on a shelf.

Monhegan Island Paintings

After completing chemotherapy and regaining some of my energy back, one of the first places I wanted to go was out to Monhegan Island. It is just an hour's ferry ride offshore in the Gulf of Maine. There is something about island life that is so peaceful and serene, and so timeless in it's remoteness and isolation.

Cancer scares people, and disclosing that information risks some friends and even some family members pulling away, leaving you alone on your island to cope however you can. Fortunately, there are also those special friends who stick with you to help in any way they can, and groups like the American Cancer Society and it's affiliates who understand and assist with the tangible needs that every cancer patient and survivor has. Like a lighthouse on a long, dark, stormy night guiding you safely to shore, you know you are not alone, and each and every day brings enjoyment and hope for recovery.

I can't exactly call it a heatwave, but the temperatures are better than they were last night.

My dog doesn't seem to mind a bit.

What a nice surprise to wake up to!

A neighbor friend of mine works in the woods. He never lets anything go the waste. This unwanted wood from a lot clearing will feed my fire, rather than the chipper. Sure beats burning my dining room chairs or a cord of books and old magazines!

I really appreciate him thinking about me.

Ok, so my car can't be fixed. At least not in any sensable way. It's only 18 years old! It was bound to happen even though it looks good, and the engine runs great. Apparently, the tons of salt and chemicals on these roads in the winter just eats cars! I have no way of replacing it, and we have no public transportation in my neck of the woods. Looks like I'll be holed up here for the duration. If anyone ever thought about buying one of my paintings, now would be a very good time to do that. Better yet, Christmas is coming - buy 3! Some of my winter wood. There's another pile of trees like the 50 footers in the background there, just out of view. Today I'm learning about carborators on a 5 h.p. Honda engine. I never wanted to learn about small engines or carborators. Still don't. I will say, however, that taking one apart and putting it back together takes all the mystery out of them! I'm determined to get my woodsplitter started. Soon!

New Fall oil paintings! That's the good news. More good news is that a neighbor came over with his chainsaw and tractor and helped me get the trees down and out of the woods to my lawn where I can cut them stove length and split them. The bad news is not only will I be burning green wood this year, I can't get my woodsplitter started. Oh, and more bad news - I talked to my mechanic today and my car is not fixable within financial reason. So it looks like I might have to replace it. We have no public transportation in this neck of the woods, and my neighbors have been very kind calling to see if I need anything from town, but I'm gonna need a car.

Yesterday, while doing errands in town, the brakes went on my 17 year old car. I managed to somehow drive it 3 miles with no brakes to the garage where it hopefully can be fixed. I had my dog in the car with me. That garage being a small operation that doesn't usually give rides to people, but with my torn up leg and because I had my dog with me, they were nice enough to give me and my dog a ride home 9 miles away from their location in town. So there are still some decent people in the world afterall.

This morning I woke up and found a car parked in my driveway by a neighbor who will be out of state at a business meeting for the next few days! Seems there are still some awesome people in the world, as well.

Heating my house these past 25 years with wood, I am thoroughly familiar with the safe use of a chainsaw. But accidents do happen. I've been harvesting my own trees to heat my home and studio since my forced resignation from teaching 5 years ago for not belonging to the "right" party or going to the "right" church. While working in the woods yesterday, I had my first what could have been really serious accident with my chainsaw. Damn thing jumped out of the tree and into my thigh! Fun walking through the woods with blood running down the inside of my leg. Just shit lucky I have a little fat for protection, and I didn't cut my leg off. Would have been coyote bait for sure. Sometimes this being older, and poor is no fun at all.

Once up at the house I peeled off my pants and examined the damage. I knew I could probably use a few stitches, but with no insurance, and no money, and the nearest free clinic about 2 hours north of here near the university in Orono (like they need free services!), getting stitches was out of the question. Years ago I tried going to the ER at our local hospital for services, and it turned out to be an exercise in humiliation and frustration as they made me sit naked for hours behind a screen where I could watch the staff sit with their feet up, sipping drinks, eating a sandwich, chatting together and otherwise ignoring me. Hours later when someone came in, he didn't even look at me, just wrote out a prescription for antibiotics and left without a word. He treated me as if I had just crawled out from under a bridge somewhere.

Knowing that, and this being the age of "Compassionate Conservatism", I knew going to the hospital was a waste of time. In fact, me having no money, they might even have let me bleed to death, so I just scrubbed out the wound and bandaged it. Today the bleeding has stopped for the most part, and it doesn't hurt. I lost one of the few pairs of sweatpants that I have that fit, but I'm ok. I can walk ok, and still need to get some wood in so I don't freeze to death this coming winter. I'd hire someone or just buy it cut, split, and delivered, like I use to do before my "social rehabilitation intervention", but in my resultant acceptable conformation, that's not possible.

Not that anyone cares, of course, just outcome report.
